At the heart of Blackborg Butterfly Sanctuary is a simple idea: wonder lives in the wings of a butterfly.
What began as a backyard project has now grown into a mission to inspire, educate, and reconnect people with nature—one caterpillar at a time. We’re a family-run sanctuary with a big dream: to create a world where children, families, and communities can engage directly with the miracle of metamorphosis. And it all starts with three incredible butterfly species: Painted Ladies, Monarchs, and Swallowtails.
Why These Butterflies?
Each species we focus on tells a unique story.
Painted Lady butterflies are ideal for classroom and at-home learning because of their short lifecycle, gentle nature, and colorful beauty. They’re often the first butterfly a child ever raises—and we love that.
Monarch butterflies represent strength and migration. Their incredible journey across North America is the stuff of legends. Monarchs are also at the heart of our butterfly release ceremonies.
Swallowtails bring elegance and diversity to the garden. With over 550 species worldwide, their tails and bold patterns make them unforgettable.
We chose these butterflies not just for their beauty, but for the life lessons they carry: transformation, resilience, and renewal.
Our Family Story
Blackborg was built on dreams, caterpillars, and a whole lot of love.
We’re a small family business with big ambitions. Our founders (that’s us—Lovisa and Christopher) started raising butterflies as a way to bond, learn, and reconnect with nature. As our daughter grew more curious, and as neighbors started asking for kits of their own, the idea of a sanctuary was born.
We want families and schools to experience what we experienced: that pause in time when a butterfly emerges, and the world feels a little softer.
